Born and raised in Louisville, Greg Fischer learned the value of hard work and responsibility early. Greg and his three brothers and sister were raised in a home where community service was welcomed. Greg’s parents, George and Mary Lee, instilled in him this core principle: “Anyone who has the ability to help another person also has the responsibility and the joy to help that person.” In turn, Greg and his wife, Alex, a local physician, have passed this generational lesson on to their four children.
Greg graduated from Trinity High School in 1976 and Vanderbilt University in 1980. To help pay for college, Greg worked summers as a crane operator on the fishing docks of Kodiak, Alaska. After college, Greg used his savings to travel solo around the world for a year before returning to his hometown of Louisville.
At age 25, Greg had a breakthrough that launched his business career when he co-invented the SerVend automated ice/beverage dispenser – the same modern-day ice and soda dispenser seen in convenience stores and restaurants across the world. Along with a great team of people including his brothers, the Fischers’ small family business, SerVend International, was transformed into a global manufacturing company employing over 300 people under Greg’s leadership. SerVend’s high-performance, results-oriented culture was recognized by USA Today with its Quality Cup Award and by the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award as a site visit finalist.
Greg continues to innovate and lead. He has launched, built or invested in more than twenty area firms while creating over a thousand jobs for the local economy. For his outstanding work in the field of business creation, Inc. Magazine named Greg one of 1990’s Entrepreneurs of the Year. Currently, Greg is the founder of chairman of Iceberg Ventures, a private investment firm.
Greg’s business success has allowed him a second career in community service, where he has focused on education and health. As past chairman of the Louisville Science Center, Greg helped raise $25 million to modernize the Center and create interactive children’s programs. In addition, Greg has endowed scholarships at Trinity High School and the University of Louisville to help create educational opportunities for those in Louisville who need a hand up. Currently, Greg serves on the University of Louisville’s Board of Overseers, as well as on the boards of Jewish Hospital HealthCare, the Waterfront Development Corporation and the Louisville Science Center. In 2007, Greg brought to Louisville Roads to You, a musical cross-cultural partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools.
Greg aims to bring his lifetime of experience and proven track record of success to City Hall with one purpose in mind: to improve the quality of life for all Louisvillians. His goal of working with great teams of people to build a healthy, growing city that is known for the highest ethical standards will guide his campaign and his administration.
