Seven Democrats are seeking the opportunity to run against Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell this fall, but just two of the candidates have a legitimate shot at winning their party's nomination in the May 20 primary.
Greg Fischer and Bruce Lunsford have much in common. Both are Louisville businessmen capable of self-financing part of their campaigns.
Both have lived the American dream in achieving their wealth but fear that opportunity is slipping away from those who aspire to do so now, thanks to the policies of President Bush's administration. Both view McConnell, the Senate minority leader, as one of Bush's chief enablers.

Louisville businessman Greg Fischer had to make a sensitive decision.
At the conclusion of the Christian County Democratic Women's Club meeting Monday night, the candidate for U.S. Senate was asked to judge a Derby hat contest. About a half-dozen women had worn fancy hats to the meeting, including one sporting a Fischer campaign sticker.

In a letter to the Editor of the Courier-Journal published April 22, 2008, retired Brown-Forman Corp. CEO Owsley Brown says Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has assured him that he remains neutral in the Senate Primary race. Brown urges Kentucky Democrats to vote for Greg Fischer, calling him, “The only candidate who will beat Mitch McConnell this fall."
